I have always assumed the Windows Support Software, supplied by Apple for my Mac, was designed only for the legacy BIOS boot method of installation. Apple did not officially start supporting this method of booting Windows until after the 2011 model year.

I have had problems in the past, and have had to reset the PRAM. It is one of those weird things, I suppose. I only pull it out when I need it, and that is rare as you have attested to. Further investigation seems to say yes to Windows running on an Intel Mac, but not on "IBM"-type Windows PC. It appears I mis-led myself by thinking the SuperDrive also should work on a Windows PC.
